Survived burial in a Trench, Pozieres 4 Aug 16
My brother, Harold Leslie Alexander, along side several other 27 Battalion solders were in a trench for protection from Artillery fire at Pozieres, when a shell collapsed the trench, burying all of us, on 4 August 1916.
We were dug out of the collapsed trench, but I was the only one to survive through my helmet being forced by the impact of the shell to cover my face, providing just sufficient air for me to breath for a short while.
Unfortunately, none of the others, including my brother, survived this catastrophe.
