Having survived almost three years of war, John Clarke was tragically cut down by pneumonia in England before he had a chance to return home to his wife in Australia. His headstone in the Tidworth Cemetery in England reads, ‘Dearly beloved husband of Sarah Clarke Tocumwal NSW Australia’. His wife posted this memoriam in the Tocumwal Guardian in 1919.
CLARKE.—On 1st March, at the Third New Zealand General Hospital, Codford, England, Driver John Leslie Clarke, died of pneumonia, dearly beloved husband of Sarah Clarke, Tocumwal.
A loving, husband gone to rest,
Dear Les was one of the best.
The hardest time is yet to come;
When the other boys return
"We will miss among the happy throng
Dear Les, who will never return.
