Add my storyBiography contributed by Stephen Brooks
John Fitzgibbon was born in Dunedin, New Zealand. His father Nicholas was old soldier, having served in the Indian Mutiny and the New Zealand War of 1860-1866. The family must have moved to Australia before 1890 as Nicholas Fitzgibbon, the father, died in Melbourne during 1890 when John was about 16 years of age. John attended Middle Park State School in Melbourne. John Fitzgibbon had fought in the Boer War with Bethune’s Mounted Infantry and Tullibardine's 2nd Scottish Horse, enlisting in Melbourne.
John’s brother, who had also fought in the Boer War, 407 Pte. James Fitzgibbon 24th Battalion AIF, was also killed at Pozieres on 29 July, 1916, age 39. Their mother Jessie was living in Albert Park in Melbourne at the time. She was granted a pension of 4 pounds per fortnight for the loss of her two sons.
