Served his wheelwright apprenticeship whip with W.M. Parker of Raika Hill, Blackpool, England. Prior to coming to Australia he had served in the 5th royal Lancashire Garrison Regiment
On 23 September 1918 Herbert married Myra Edis in Sneinton Parish Church, Nottingham, England. Vicar Booth H. Lynes officiated
