The Story of the Two Herbert Murray's, being one in the same!

3365 Trooper Herbert Murray  (7th Light Horse Regiment) and

61997 Private Herbert Murray (13th GSR late 7th Field Ambulance)

A classic example of a soldier being lost in the system.

The Office of Base Records were unable to link 3365 Herbert Murray 2 MD as the same man. When at Broadmeadows Camp Herbert was reissued a new Serial Number 61997 from the 3 MD.

To confound the issue Herbert's parents sent letters to reflect he had not written to them noe had they received any allotment from him since Herbert enlisted.

To put more fuel on the fire Herbert had been sent to no more than 5 different Camps in Victoria over an 11 month period.

Finally when 61997 Private Herbert Murray left Australia with the 13th GSR, the Attorney General Department conducted an audit concluding 3365 Trooper Murray must be still in Australia.

In 1923 both Herbert Murray's files were combined and as a result the Record showed

3365 Trooper Herbert Murray was discharged for desertion from the AIF from 16 May 1918 ; however

61997 Private Herbert Murray 7th Field Ambulance (late 13th GSR) served honourably in England from October 1918 to 1919.

Issued the British War Medal.
