Biography contributed by Neil Leckie

“Joe” Fawcett was born in Clunes, 35 kms north of Ballarat, and was a 19-year-old single Farm Hand when enlisted in Melbourne on 17 July 1915. As he lived near a town, he was required to undertake CMT and served for 12 months with the 71st (City of Ballarat) Infantry, Citizen Forces, which had a detachment at Clunes. Joe was promoted to Lance Corporal in Egypt just before 18 Coy embarked for France. He was promoted just before the end on the war to Temporary Corporal and in early January 1919 promoted to Corporal. Joe embarked for return to Australia on 2 June 1919, arrived in Melbourne on 19 July and was discharged from the AIF on 10 September 1919 on his Termination of Period of Enlistment. On return Joe moved to Sea Lake and resumed farming.
