Ralph was the son of Henry John and Evelyn Dart of Mundoora. Henry Dart was the head teacher at the Mundoora Public School. Ralph was born at Burra on 7 December 1890. An engineer, Ralph was 24 years old he enlisted on 22 July 1915.
Ralph was appointed to 4th Reinforcements 5th Pioneer Battalion and embarked from Adelaide aboard HMAT A53 “Itria” on 14 August and disembarked in Devonport on 30 October. In England he qualified 1st class at the rifle course held at the school of musketry and displayed a fair working knowledge of the Lewis Gun. On 20 April 1917 Ralph proceeded overseas to France and was taken on strength of 5 Pioneer Battalion in the field. Ralph was appointed a lieutenant on 15 May and in August was appointed a Lewis Gun Officer. Near Corbie, on 2 May 1918 Ralph was slightly wounded with a gunshot wound to his nose but remained on duty.
After the cessation of hostilities Ralph took leave and studied electrical engineering with British Westinghouse Company Limited. He embarked from England on 1 November 1919 and disembarked from HMAT A71“Nestor” on 12 December. His appointment was terminated on 4 February 1920.
