William was born a Lower Nicholson, Victoria in 1896 and he was the son of William Henry Barter and Mary Ann Whihworth. On enlisting with the Australian Imperial Force on 12th January 1916 his occupation is shown as a Striker. He embarked for England with the 11th reinforcements of the 21st Australian Infantry Battalion, and he then proceeded to France where he joined the battalion on 28th September 1916. William was wounded in action on 10th March 1917 and he was admitted into the 45th Casualty Clearing Station with wounds to his left arm, left leg and face. He was evacuated to England on 22nd March and he was admitted into the 1st London General Hospital. He remained in hospital till the 11th May and then he was discharged and granted furlough till the 14th June. He returned to France and he re-joined the battalion where he was wounded in action (2nd occasion) however he remained on duty. On 18th May 1918 he was wounded in action (3rd occasion) and he was admitted into the 5th Australian Field Ambulance with a gunshot wound to his hand. He was evacuated to England where he was admitted into the 3rd Southern General Hospital where he remained till July, William remained in the United Kingdom and he returned to Australia 2nd July 1919 and he was discharged on 16th August. In 1924 he married Ella Mary Kane and from the 1930's, William worked as a Timber worker and they lived in Neerim South in Gippsland.
