Biography contributed by Michael Silver

Born in Ireland, James Joseph Hollywood  obtained is medical degree at the Catholic University of Ireland, Dublin in 1906. He migrated to Australia in late 1907 and was registered as a medical practitioner in New South Wales on 12 January 1908.

Soon after he gained a a locum appointment at Raymond Terrace before joining the practice of Dr William Dudley Power, also an Irish Catholic, in High Street, Maitland. Dr Power had operated the surgery since 1880. Power died in June 1912, with Dr Hollywood taking over the practice. Hollywood married Power's daughter Adele in the following October.

Like his father-in-law Dr Hollywood undertook a number of honorary and government appointments including Medical Officer at Maitland Hospital, honorary Medical Officer to the Maitland Benevolent Society, Government Medical Officer and visting Medical Officer to the Maitland Gaol.

In early 1915 he accepted a 12 month appointment with the Australian Medical Corps during World War I, serving in the Australian General Hospitals in Egypt. He returned to Maitland on 8 August 1916 and resumed his private practice.

As part of his public roles he was involved in the immunization and containment of the influenza pandemic during 1919. Tragically, his wife Adele became a victim of the Spanish 'flu leaving him to raise their three infant children. In 1922 he married his sister-in-law Mary Pierce (Mollie) Power - they were to have three children, sadly two died as infants.

Dr Hollywood continued his practice in High Street, Maitland after the war and his associations with the hospital, gaol and as Area Medical Officer.  In 1942 his daughter, from his first marriage, Moira married Dr Kevin McNamee. Following his return from service with the Australian Army Medical Corps during World War II, McNamee joined the practice after Hollywood's son Thomas Desmond, who also had qualified as a doctor, decided to leave Maitland. Dr McNamee would acquire the practice following Hollywood's retirement in 1950.

In retirement Dr James Joseph Hollywood and his wife moved to Sydney, residing at Rose Bay. He died there in 1955 with Mollie passing away in 1974.
