Ernest Kingston was born at the New Winchester Unioin Workhouse Hampshire, England on 29 January 1887. His mother, Ellen, was unmarried and his father is unknown. Ellen was 16 years of age living with her parents Daniel and Jane Kingston. After the birth Ellen moved away and Ernest was raised by his grandparents in Vernham Dean.
On 5 January 1912 Ernest departed London, England on the ship 'Oswentry Grange' arriving in Townsville, Queensland, Australia to live with his uncle John Kingston. When WWI broke out in 1914 Ernest enlisted in the AIF on 10 June 1915 with the rank of Private 9th Battalion. He embarked from Brisbane, Queensland on 16 August 1915. Upon arrival at the Western Front in Belgium the 9th Battalion joined forces with the 13th Light Trench Mortar Battery
In early December 1916 Ernest returned to England on leave from fighting. He married his childhood sweetheart Agnes Palmer at this time. Agnes became pregnant soon after the marriage. Ernest returned to trhe battlefields of Belgium in early 1917. Agnes gave birth to a boy Norman Alfred Kingston in the first few days of October 1917. Ernest was quickly informed while in battle.
On 12 October 1917 Ernest was killed in action at Broodseinde Ridge, Passchendaulle. Ernest is buried at DochyFarm, New British Cemetery, Belgium. His son, Norman died in December 1917. Agnes never remarried and died in March 1980.
