Alvin joined the 48th Battalion and left Sydney on board HMAT Runic on 22 March 1918. He proceeded to France with his unit on 29 October. Alvin saw little active service as the war ended a few weeks after their arrival in France. He returned to Australia from London on 22 April 1919 and was discharged on 24 September.

Alvin Lewis Hanson, son of Anthony Hanson was a soldier during the First World War in 1914. Alvin had a brother H.L. Hanson. Alvin was born on the 18th of June 1899, in South Australia. Prior to his enlistment in the war, he lived in Adelaide on 15 high street, Kensington. He was a young eighteen-year-old with brown eyes brown hair and stood at a height of 5'7, as stated on his enlistment papers. He worked as a clerk before his enlistment and had 4 years and 6 months of previous military experience. Alvin was Christian and was single at the time. 

He embarked as a private in the 48th Infantry Battalion, on the ship HMAT Runic, in Sydney, 22 Mar 1918. He completed more training at Godford and was sent to France 29th October 1918. On the 4th November he was taken on strength to the 5th Machine Gun Battalion. This battalion took part in the final stages of World War 1. The battalion participated in the closing phases of the war, engaging in the Allied defense against the German offensive and later contributing to the Hundred Days Offensive that ultimately ended the war. It was disbanded in mid-1919 as part of the demobilization of the Australian Imperial Force (AIF) leading to the conclusion of hostilities.

He was discharged from the A.I.F on 24/9/1919. Alvin's brother lieutenant H. L. Hanson returned to Australia on the 15/8/1919. He Disembarked on the 30th of June 1919, returning to Australia.

 

Alvin Lewis Hanson then arrived back to Australia on the 22nd of July 1919 returning from the war successfully, alive. He received three medals; a 1914/15-star, a British war medal, and a victory medal all given at the sacrifice he took to fight for his country.

 

Post war Alvin found himself a wife, Irene Beryl Hanson. They then continued to create their own business, with a bricklaying company where they became quite successful. According to newspapers from 1950 it states that Alvin and Irene combined companies with Jeffery Cleveland and Patricia Wilson to create their new bricklaying company 'Hanson & Wilson'.
