Charles Courtney APPLEYARD was born in Alberton, Victoria in 1881
His parents were George Courtney APPLEYARD & Jane SCOTT
He married Rose WOODGATE & had 3 children, Clement Harry Courtney, Edna Merle & Lorna May
Charles enlisted in Melbourne on 15th July, 1915 and embarked with the 23rd Infantry Battalion, 9th reinforcements from Melbourne on the HMAT Warilda on 8th February, 1916- he was pormoted to Lance Corporal on 12th August, 1916 and to Sergeant on 23rd August 1916
He was wounded in action in the right shoulder on 10th November, 1916 and admitted to the 36th Casualty Clearing Station in France where he died from his wounds on 15th November, 1916 & is buried in the Heilly Station Cemetery, Plot V, Row G, Grave 12

He was awarded a Military Medal on 9th August, 1916 for gallant reconnaissance in daylight of enemys trench on 4th/5th August, 1916 returning with valuable information (Pozieres)
