When Richard Blackmore Craven was born on 1 January 1895 in Richmond, Victoria, his father, John, was 55 and his mother, Jane, was 32. He married Vera Alice Scott in 1919. They had two children during their marriage. He died on 17 December 1966 in Glenroy, Victoria, at the age of 71.
