Frederick Joseph FLINTOFF was born in Sunbury, Victoria in 1894 and attended school at the Sunbury State School.

He was working as a groom in the Sunbury area when he enlisted on 5/9/1914 at Melbourne.

He left Australia on 20/10/1914 aboard the HMAT Armadale.

He did suffer with sickness on the voyage to Egypt and spent time in hospital.

After transferring to France he again took sick and was sent to hospital in the UK.

On 27/2/1917 he went AWL from hospital and was not apprehended until 9/11/1917 when he was found in civilian clothes in London.

He was brought before a courts martial and sentenced to 2 years detention.

He was released on 4/9/1918 and returned to his unit. On 8/10/1918 he married Ethel Grace Robinson in London.

At the conclusion of the war he was given leave to study Electrical Engineering with a firm in London, from 29/5/1919 to 31/10/1919.

He returned to Australia, accompanied by his wife and small child arriving on 6/2/1920 and was discharged from the Army on 4/9/1920.

The family returned to Sunbury and unfortunately Frederick died on 14/5/1923, and is buried in the Sunbury Cemetery.
