Biography contributed by Stephen Brooks

Walter was born in Yorkshire, England. He enlisted at Blackboy Hill in Western Australia and was with the 51st Battalion when he was captured at Mouquet Farm, France, on 3 September 1916 and held as a POW in Germany until he was transferred to Interlaken, Switzerland on 27 November 1917. He wrote from Switzerland during November 1917 "I have arrived in Switzerland. I cannot realise I am out of Germany. It surprised me very much when I passed the Commission as there are men in there now a 100 times worse than I am. I had some very hard times whilst there. I am very pleased to think that I have not to have another winter in Germany, I shall never forget the last.” Pte Wetherall was repatriated to England in December 1918 and returned to Australia in 1919.
