A Fine Record of Service - South Melbourne City Inspector (Mr. Charles Robe Anderson) will commence long service leave on January 14, 1949, preparatory to his retirement from the service of the Council on March 1, 1950.
Mr. Anderson commenced duty with the Council as a member of the outdoor staff in November, 1910. He was employed as a roller driver for five years.
He married Lily Mary Ann Johnston in 1912. They had a daughter who died in infancy and a son, born in 1915.
Enlisting as a Private with the 7th Battalion AIF in July 1915 he embarked at Melbourne for the front three months later. He was elevated to Second Lieutenant in March 1917 and promoted to Lieutenant the following September.
In his last actions of the war, during August 1918 near Peronne, France he was most prominent in several assaults on the enemy lines, leading to the success of his company. In the his final operation, on 23 August 1918 at Proyart he distinguished himself in the gallant manner in which he lead his men until badly gassed.
Wounded four times during his service with the AIF he returned to Australia in September 1919.
Resuming municipal duty, he was appointed part-time Assistant Inspector and Bathing Inspector. He subsequently occupied the positions of Assistant Market Collector and Assistant Health Inspector, being appointed City Inspector in September, 1943. In his off-work periods, Mr. Anderson has for many years been head trainer for Carlton Football Club.
Lieutenant Charles Rode Anderson died at Hiedelburg, Victoria in 1952.
