John Richard Milham was the son of Thomas William Leaf Milham and Alice Milham of Abbortsford Victoria. His father passed away in 1914.

His brother, 3356 Pte. Thomas Sidney Milham 59th Battalion AIF was killed in action at Fromelles 19 July 1916, aged 19.

John enlisted at only 17 years of age and served with the 21st Battalion but fell sick in England and was treated for tuberculosis for much of 1916. He was returned to Australia during February 1917. He died of tuberculosis only a few months later in the MacLeod Sanitarium in Melbourne on 7 June 1917. He was just 18 years of age when he died.
