Thomas Hamilton Bryan was born in Kingston, South Australia on the 26th of June 1887. He was born to Thomas and Sarah Cristina Bryan. He was the couple’s seventh child and was the second youngest son. Before enlistment, Thomas Hamilton Bryan worked as a farmer. He was a naturalised British subject.

On the 28th of June 1915 at Keswick, South Australia, he enlisted for the army at 28 years old. He declared he was single, a methodist, and his next of kin was his mother, Sarah Cristina Bryan.

His description states that he was 5’7”, weighed 170lbs (77.11kgs), and is described as having a ‘fresh’ complexion. Thomas Hamilton Bryan also had grey eyes and dark brown hair.

Thomas Hamilton Bryan had the service number ‘3210’. He served in the Base Infantry from the 24th of June to the 16th of July 1915. On the 14th of September 1915, his unit embarked from Adelaide, South Australia on board the HMAT A70 Ballarat. After that he was assigned to the 10th Infantry Battalion. On the 26th of February 1916, Thomas Hamilton Bryan was taken on strength and was transferred to the 50th Battalion.

His brother, Private William Edward Bryan was in the 2nd Machine Gun Battalion.

On the 5th of June 1916, Thomas Hamilton Bryan proceeded to join the British Expeditionary Force in France.

He was to be a Temporary Sergeant on the 11th of October 1916 and was later promoted to the rank of Sergeant the same day.

Thomas Hamilton Bryan received a Distinguished Conduct Medal -  ‘For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty when in charge of the extreme right flank of the attack. By his energy and courage, he consolidated his position and repelled a hostile counter-attack against his flank, afterwards following the enemy up with a bombing party and clearing them out of the trench. He held his ground for three hours under very trying circumstances’ on the 25th of August 1917.

On January 18, 1918, casualty forms state he fell sick to scabies (a parasitic infection caused by mites burrowing into the skin).

Records state he is discharged due to ‘cessation of hostilities’.

31st of March 1919, Thomas Hamilton Bryan boards the SS. Khyber to return to Australia. His next of kin – his mother, Sarah Christina Bryan – is advised of his return.

Thomas Hamilton Bryan passed on October 8 1967 at 80 years old due to unknown circumstances.
