An orchardist from Harcourt, Victoria prior to enlistment, Pte 7479 Frederick Clifford Ely embarked with the 25th Reinforcements, 7th Battalion from Melbourne on HMAT Themistocles on 4 August 1917.
Following the Armistice he was promoted to Lance Corporal and transferred to the 1st Australian Divisional Train.
Subsequently granted leave to remain in England in order to study farming at Shrewsbury, he returned to Australia on 22 September 1919.
