Alfred McLaren 'Mac' Moore served in World War I and World War II.
After his father Alfred's marriage in 1886 to Agnes Kelly, of Riverton, Alfred moved south from Hartely Vale (near Gumeracha) to McLaren Vale before ultimately going back to Hartley Vale, on the Ferndale portion of his father's estate. [See CHRONICLE Feb 2, 1939 p 14]
'Mac' Moore was an orchardist in Hartley Vale when he enlisted as a Private in the 27th Battalion on 1 March 1915. He embarked with his unit from Adelaide on board the HMAT A2 Geelong on 31 May 1915. After serving in the latter stages of the Gallipoli campaign, Moore moved to the Western Front. He attended officer training in 1916 and was subsequently promoted to Lieutenant.
Moore returned to Australia on 8 April 1919 having been awarded the Croix de Guerre (Belgium).
He married Sylvia Ruth Ellen Pritchard on 25 October 1922 in St Augustine Church, Unley, South Australia, Australia.
Moore lived in Gumeracha after the war but at some stage he moved to Renmark in the Riverland where, when Word War II broke out, has was a representative for Australian Mutual Provident (AMP), probably selling insurance.
Using these skills he re-enlisted on 26 June 1940 and served during the war for the Australian Army Pay Corps.
