Walter was taken on strength of the 59 Battalion on 20 July 1917, he was mortally wounded with a head wound 2 September 1918, and died in a Casualty Clearing Station two weeks later.
His older brother, 1716 Sergeant Alfred Callaghan, 3rd Battalion AIF had been killed in action, 6 October 1917, aged 26.
Their NOK was their mother, Mrs Sarah Ann Callaghan, of Bankstown, New South Wales, their father having died during 1901 when the boys were quite young.
