Private William Henry Stallard

A forgotten digger of The Great War and Sandgate Cemetery.
95 years ago today, on the Tuesday afternoon of the 26th August 1924, Private William Henry Stallard, Australian Corps Working Party, railway cleaner from Railway Street, Glebe, Newcastle, New South Wales and 108 Gosford Road, Adamstown, N.S.W., father of one, was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 25. METHODIST 1 (WESLEYAN) I SW.13.

Born at Merewether, New South Wales on the 15th September 1898 to Frederick and Mary J Stallard; husband of Doris I Stallard nee Onslow (married 1921, died?), William enlisted April 1917 with the 1st Battalion at Newcastle, N.S.W.
Wounded in action on the 10th August 1918 (gassed), William returned home invalided and for being under-age February 1919.

William’s name has been inscribed on the Cooks Hill Superior Public School Roll of Honour, Merewether (Glebe) Methodist Church Roll of Honour, Merewether (Mitchell Park) Memorial Gates and the Stallard Roll of Honour (photo, unveiled date unknown). Name not inscribed on the NSW Govt Railways and Tramways Roll of Honour, 1914-1919.

There is no headstone for Mr Stallard to tell us he served King and Country, and probably died an early death because of it, so I have placed a cross adorned with poppies on the gravesite, taken a photo of the grave and uploaded the photo onto the Northern Cemetery website as a permanent record of his service.
