Biography contributed by Kadina Memorial School

Frederick Gustave Mumme 1174

Frederick was born in June, 1896, and raised in Kadina South Australia by his mother, Mrs Rachel Susanah Mumme. He remained in Kadina throughout his childhood and he was employed as a motor mechanic until he enlisted for World War One.

Frederick enlisted for the war on the 20th of March 1916, in his hometown, Kadina. He embarked on the 9th of June, 1916 on board the HMAT Afric from Adelaide, South Australia. He was sent as a private, which is the beginning rank in the army and remained a private the whole time he served. He was transferred to the 11th Light Trench Mortar Battery from the 43rd Battalion, D company.

He arrived in France on the 23rd of November, 1917. During Frederick's time in France, the 11th Light Trench Mortar Battery supported the 11th Brigade, fighting against the German army.

On the 10th of December 1917, Mumme was wounded accidentally by a shell on the field. He was discharged from hospital on the 15th of December.

In 1918 the 11th Light Trench Mortar Battery was involved in preparing and supporting raids on German positions in northern France by their Division. They also helped with salvage work and with burying the members of the 11th Brigade who had been killed in action.

Later on the 1st of September, the 11th Light Trench Mortar Battery was attached to the 41st Infantry Battalion when they attacked near Allaines in northern France. Frederick was wounded in this action and discharged from hospital between the 3rd and 18th of October.

He survived the war and returned to Australia on the 25th of January 1919. Frederick lived until his sixties and passed away on the 29th of November, 1963. He was buried at Centennial Park Cemetery, South Australia. There are two memorials with his name on it in Kadina, South Australia. There is one on Taylor Street, Kadina at the Town Hall (KadinaHB04). It is a large board with 6 columns with names written in gold. The second memorial is on Doswell Terrace, Kadina (KadinaHR1). It is located in the old entrance to Kadina Memorial School.

For Frederick's service at the war he was presented with two medals. The British War Medal (also known as the "squeak"- established in the 26th of July 1919) was awarded to officers and men of the British Imperial forces who entered theatre of war or entered service overseas between the 5th of August, 1914 and the 11th of November, 1918. The other medal he received was the Victory Medal (also know as the "Wilfred"). Each of the Allies issued their own bronze victory medal. When these two medals are earned and put together, it is often known as the "Muff and Jeff".
