Major William Sheldon, Australian Flying Corps was from Albert Park, Melbourne, Victoria. A 26 year old professional soldier prior to being appointed a Captain in the AFC on 6 January 1916, he embarked for overseas with A Flight, No 1 Squadron AFC from Melbourne during March 1916. He travelled via Egypt to England before arriving in France where he was promoted to Major and appointed to command 71 Squadron Royal Flying Corps (RFC) (No 4 Squadron AFC) and No 2 Squadron AFC. He arrived back in Australia on 5 August 1918.
