Biography contributed by Stephen Brooks

William Campbell was the son of John and Elizabeth Campbell and was born in Wardell, New South Wales during 1898. His mother and father both died when he was only about seven years of age. He was only 19 years of age when he died at Messines during 1917.

He had one brother and two sisters. His younger brother, 29 Pte. John Campbell 31st Battalion AIF was killed in action at Fromelles during July 1916.

The only two remaining members of William’s family were his sister Margaret, age 15 when he died and Elizabeth who was 13 years of age. Margaret and Elizabeth corresponded with the AIF over the years about receiving her brother medals, personal effects and photographs of their graves. Margaret married at age 19 in 1921 and changed her surname to Rundle.

The sisters were both awarded pensions of 5 shillings per fortnight from 1 September 1917.
