Joseph Maxwell Bauman (recorded as Max Joseph Bauman on Qld BDM records) was born on 17 Oct 1881 in Brisbane, a son to Max Joseph Bauman and Pauline Auguste Caroline Bauman (nee Richter). He married Olive Beatrice Elliot on 15 Dec 1925 in Brisbane.
He served in both the South African (Boer) War and WW1. First service was as a Private S.N. 468 in the 5th Queensland Imperial Bushmen, Boer War. Second service was as a Amourer Sergeant S.N. 84 in the 31st Infantry Battalion AIF WW1. He was awarded a MBE (civil list) in 1937.
