Mary Edith was the daughter of Patrick and Mary Agnes Cullen [nee McNamara]. After spending seven years at North Adelaide Private Hospital, including her service as a student nurse, Mary served on the hospital ships Karoola, Orsova, Ajana and Demosthenes prior to enlisting in 1917. Mary embarked A39 Ulysses in Sydney on 9 May 1917, reaching Plymouth, England on 29 July. She was based at Croydon War Hospital from 11 August, then attached to No.3 Australian Auxiliary Hospital at Dartford on 15 December.
Mary was sent to France on 25 May 1918 where she served at the 1st Australian General Hospital, being promoted to sister on 1 October. Upon the cessation of hostilities she served at A. I. F. Headquarters in London before returning to Australia on the Zealandic on 27 March 1920, arriving in Australia on 12 May. Mary was discharged on 24 July. She later worked at Highbury
Hospital in Hobart.

Marry Editha Cullen was born on the 29th of March 1883, her parents were Patrick Cullen and Mary Agnes nee McNamara. She grew up in Mount Gambier, South Australia.
Mary studied and trained at the North Adelaide hospital and on the 9th of July 1915 enlisted to work in world war one as a nurse. A year later, she embarked on 29 December 1916.
She survived the first world war, she did not marry or have children and died on the 21st of September 1943 at Payneham, South Australia as a 61 year old. She was burried at the Willaston Cemetery.
