Son of Charles Edwin Vautin and Elizabeth Harriett Findlay Jordan Hill Road, Hobart, Tasmania. Brother of Lindsay George Vautin who returned to Australia on 29 November 1919 having served with the 11th Field Artillery Brigade. 

Commenced return to Australia on 31 October 1917 aboard HT Berrima disembarking on 26 November 1917.

On 27 December 1930 Alan married Doris Josephine Lucas in Glenorchy, Tasmania
