Coleman Abelson was born in Glamorganshire, South Wales and moved to Adelaide, Australia at the age of 10.
Prior to enlisting, Abelson was an optician. Upon enlistment, Abelson, who was unmarried, listed his mother Mrs Sophia Abelson as his next of kin. Abelson may have still lived at home at the time of enlistment as his address was that of his parents: 9 Torrens Street, East Adelaide. Abelson enlisted in Adelaide on the 22nd June, 1916 at the age of 29.
Abelson was assigned to the AIF's 43rd Battalion, 3rd Reinforcement (AWM Embarkation Roll number 23/60/2), and embarked from Adelaide aboard the HMAT A68 Anchises on 28 August 1916.
During the war, Abelson was transfered to the 40th Battalion.
Abelson was killed in action in France on the 31st January, 1917. He was 30 years old. Abelson was buried at the Cite Bonjean Military Cemetery (Plot IV, Row D, Grave No 9), France. For his service, Abelson was awarded the British War Medal and the Victory Medal.
