Ernest was the fifth of twelve children of William John McCredden (b1863 in Terang, Victoria) and Margaret Ann Wylie (b1858 in Mokey Gully, Linton, Victoria). William - a Farmer - and Margaret married in 1886 in St Arnaud, Wimmera and settled at Reedy Dam in Birchip where William was a Farmer. Nine sons volunteered in WWI, with five sons being attested. Three sons were KiA - John, Albert and Ernest.

A Farmer at Reedy Dam in April 1914, Ernest enlisted in the AIF (Service No:2278), serving initially as a Military Policeman at Broadmeadows and Seymour, and as Provost Sergeant at the Commonwelth Detention Barracks in Bendigo, beofre joining the 13th Light Horse Regiment as a Trooper. Ernest was in France when he transferred to 12th Field Artillery Brigade as a Gunner and was in France when he was KiA in 1918. Ernest was 'Buried in support trenches in front of Meteren about 300 yards from the Flete Meteren road' (National Archives Australia).
