Background
Ernest Wilfred was born 1878 in Hawthorn, Victoria. He was educated at St Peter's College in Adelaide. He joined the AIF on 11th August 1915 with the 12th Battery, 4th Field Artillery Brigaded as a gunner, RN 6840. Ernest embarked at Melbourne on the HMAT Wiltshire 18th November and embarked in Marseilles, France. He was wounded in action (gassed) 27/7/1918 and admitted to hospital for some months. Returned to active duty and returned home to Port Denison on 26th May 1919. Ernest died on in March 1947, in Camberwell.
In his letters of 1916 and 1917, Capt Gerald Evans MC, MiD (8th Battalion) mentions meeting Wilfred on a number of occasions in France.
