Before the war started Roy Gordon Garvie was a law clerk employed by Mr H Solomon, Solicitor. Garvie was born in June 1895 in Crafers South Australia but lived at Aldgate South Australia at the time of enlistment. His mother Mary Elizabeth Garvie is listed on his attestation paper as his next of kin when he enlisted at 19 years old.
At 19 years old Garvie enlisted at Morphettville in South Australia on 19 Aug 1914. After enlisting he joined the 3rd Light Horse Regiment where he trained with them ifor around 2 months before they embarked from Port Lincoln on the 22nd of October 1914 to go and train with other troops in Egypt. He proceeded to join the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force 9th May 1915 at Gallipoli. He was then wounded 13 days later at Monash Valley during the conflict and sent to hospital. It seems from his records that he remained in hospital and was further diagnosed with Jaundice in early October. He rejoined his unit 25th October 1915 and was promoted to Lance Corporal 3rd November 1915.
During Gallipoli, the 3rd Light Horse Regiment was deployed in defensive positions and assisted in evacuating the wounded. Then on the 14th of December 1915, the 3rd Light Horse Regiment left Gallipoli and returned to Egypt. While they were Back in Egypt the 3rd Light Horse regiment joined the ANZAC Mounted Division.
Between January and May 1916, the regiment was deployed to protect the Nile valley from bands of pro-Turkish Senussi Arabs. Garvie was promoted to Temporary Corporal 22nd May 1916 but his rank reverted to Private on 11th July 1916 when he was sent to hospital in Romani due to an unspecified illness. He was promoted again to Temporary Corporal on 16th July 1916 and returned to his unit.
On the 23rd of July 1916 Roy Garvie was transferred to the 1st Light Horse Brigade Machine Gun Squadron. The purpose of this squadron was to support troops through Egypt and Palestine. After being with the 1st Light Horse Brigade Machine Gun Squadron for a couple of weeks later Garvie was promoted to Sergeant on 1st August 1916.
In 1917 he was sent to reset camp in Marakeb in May and then to the School of Instruction for training on 28th July 1917. He returned to his unit 19th August 1917 as a qualified range taker instructor.
Garvie was promoted to Second Lieutenant on 19th September 1917. While still serving in the 1st Light Horse Brigade Machine Gun Squadron. Three months later on 16th December 1917 Roy Gordan Garvie was promoted yet again to Lieutenant.
In February 1918 he was transferred to the Imperial School of Instruction in Zeitoun. He returned to the Machine Gun Squadron in May.
Garvie was honoured with a Military Cross 25th July 1918 for " conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty” he was awarded this because while his post was overrun he kept control of the machine guns and was able to hold the position until reinforcements arrived.
Garvie embarked home to Australia 10th April 1919 arriving back on 16th May 1919. He was discharged on 26th August 1919.
Garvie's brother Lance Corporal Stanley Hinde GARVIE served in the 3rd Light Horse regiment. He also went to war and returned to Australia on the 21st of January 1916 three years before Roy returned to Australia.
