"BARNES, Barney. Private. No. 472, 31st Battalion. Born at Auckland, New Zealand, in 1869, and educated at Auckland High School. Son of the late Charles and the late Mary A. Barnes. Enlisted at Brisbane on 14th February, 1915, and sailed for Egypt. Went into Heliopolis and saw service on the canal from December till June, 1916. Left for France, landing at Marseilles on 6th June, and went into the firing line at Fleur Bay. Wounded and invalided to England. Sailed for Australia, arriving in July, 1917, and was discharged as medically unfit in August, 1917.
