William Clifton was a married man and worked at the Anthony Hordern's Iron Yard in Redfern, Sydney. His wife Minnie and daughter Una were both granted pensions after his death.
His brother, 4773 Lance Corporal Wenford John Clifton, 55th Battalion, of Randwick, NSW, was also killed in action in the previous month on 2 April 1917. They were the sons of Walter and Selina Clifton of Sydney, New South Wales.
