"...2463 Private William Ernest Auhl, 12th Reinforcements, 2nd Field Company Engineers, of South Morang, Vic. Pte Auhl enlisted on 4 May 1915 and embarked aboard RMS Mooltan in Sydney on 11 December 1915. Pte Auhl was transferred to the Australian Army Medical Corps on 28 April 1916 but remained attached to the 2nd Field Company Engineers as a medical detail. On 23 July 1916 he was killed in action at Pozieres, France. His death is commemorated at the Villers Bretonneux Memorial in France. Note that he is wearing the Red Cross badge which denotes that he is a member of the Australian Army Medical Corps." - SOURCE (www.awm.gov.au)
"Very much regret was felt when the news came through of the death of Private W. E. Auhl, second son of Mr. and Mrs. E. Auhl, of South Morang, who was killed in action in France on the 23rd July. Only a few days before the news of his death came through, his brother, T. Auhl, had arrived back from the front wounded; and great pleasure was expressed at his return; but the joy was saddened by the news of his brother's death. Pte. Auhl was formerly in the Army Medical Corps, but seeing no hope of getting away in that corps for some time he joined the Engineers, and was with them when he met his death." - from the Northcote Leader 26 Aug 1916 (nla.gov.au)
