The funeral of Sapper Ernest Samuel Northey MM, took place on Wednesday, and the large attendance testified to the esteem in which the young soldier was held.
There was a large muster of returned soldiers, and the patriotic bodies were well represented. The remains were conveyed on a gun carriage draped with the deceased's battalion colours and the Union Jack.
The Rev. J. H. Margetts held a short service at the house prior to the funeral, and spoke of the high and Christian character of the deceased.
He also officiated at the graveside, being assisted by Mr. A. Lowbridge, who read the service of the Rechabite Lodge, of which deceased was a member.
The pall-bearers were Sergeant S. Martin and Bugler Smith, representing the Returned Soldiers' Association, and Privates H. Turnbull, J. Davis, Barrett, and J. Mlilgate. Bugler Smith sounded "The Last Post" at the conclusion of the ceremony.
The soldiers paraded under Lieutenant R. B. Wilson, A.F.C., assisted by Lieutenant P. Flannigan.

103 years ago today, on the Wednesday afternoon of the 12th November 1919, Sapper Ernest Samuel Northey (M.M.), 4th Australian Division Signals Company (Reg No-6294), clerk (Trade & Customs Dept, Newcastle, N.S.W.), from Hampden Avenue, Adamstown, New South Wales, was laid to rest with a military Funeral at Sandgate Cemetery, age 25. METHODIST 1 (WESLEYAN) L SE. 46.
Ernest had died on the 10th November 1919 at the Woodville Red Cross Home, Randwick, N.S.W. of pulmonary tuberculosis.
Not married.
Born at Broken Hill, New South Wales on the 8th October 1894 to Samuel (died 29.12.1948, age 75) and Elizabeth Mary Northey nee Thomas (died 24.9.1932, age 59), Ernest enlisted July 1915 with the 5th Australian Field Ambulance, 6th Reinforcements, at Liverpool, N.S.W.
Admitted to hospital 10.12.1915 (influenza), 14.3.1916 (influenza, mild), 5.9.1917 (scabies), 10.2.1918 (pyrexia - increased body temperature above normal body temperature), 13.3.1918 (not stated), 27.11.1918 (not stated).
Awarded Military Medal 9.10.1916.
