"...3073 Lance Corporal Albert Henry (Harry) Lee, 3rd Australian Machine Gun Company, from Lismore, NSW who enlisted at the age of 21 on 28 July 1915 and embarked for overseas with the 9th Battalion on 5 October 1915 aboard HMAT Warilda. He was wounded in action in France on 6 May 1917 and evacuated to England for treatment. After returning to his unit, he was wounded again on 10 August 1918 and again evacuated to England. He arrived back in Australia on 15 May 1919. There is no record of L/Cpl Lee being a POW however his portrait was amongst a series of over 80 photographs given by Allied POWs in the camp at Schneidemuhl, Germany, to 3235 Corporal (Cpl) James Skelly, 55th Battalion, from Rockdale, NSW, presumably as a souvenir of their time together. Cpl Skelly was a self-described “special correspondent” for the Australian Red Cross while at Schneidemuhl and originally donated these photographs to the Ramsgate R.S.L.
