Recollections of my Father
My recollections of my father, Lot Sydney Forbes Barker, commonly known as Syd, by Lee Sydney Barker:
Dad died when I was eighteen and in my first year of an engineering degree. We were great friends. He had left school at the age of fourteen or younger, was an apprentice and attended night school at the Working Man's College (now RMIT) for some years when he was young. He had a wide variety of interests - music, gardening, history and literature - in addition to his great interest in all things relating to engineering.
My memories include Dad playing the violin and our harmonium - the apple of his eye - but not realising he was self-taught, and that his interest in and knowledge of music in the light of his background was quite extraordinary.
My father died in 1947. His death certificate says the cause of death was cerebral haemorrhage, arteriosclerosis and pyonephrosis. He had been in poor health for several years, originally from the aftermath of the gas attack in France in 1918, the long-term effects of which had him in hospital in the early 1930s.
