OBITUARY
DR P. E. VOSS
Dr Paul E. Voss, one of the best known medical practitioners in Central Queensland, a soldier of World War 1, and a man who was actively associated with many public bodies, died yesterday morning after a short illness.
Dr Voss was born in Rockhampton in 1892 and attended the Rockhampton Grammar School, then the North Shore Church of England Grammar School, Sydney. From there he went to the Sydney University where he was outstanding scholastically and in sport. He represented the University for several years in rowing and was selected for an Olympic crew.
Dr Voss graduated in medicine with honours, and his early medical experience was gained at the Prince Alfred Hospital, Sydney. Early in 1916 he joined the Army and served with distinction in France, where he was wounded several times, and won the Military Cross.
When discharged from the Army,, Dr Voss commenced practice with his father and Dr Davidson in Rockhampton. He succeeded to this practice and Hillcrest Private Hospital in 1929. Prior to this, in 1927, Dr. Voss was elected a Fellow of the Royal Australian College of Surgeons. Early in his medical career he was an honorary medical officer to the Rockhampton Women's Hospital.
Dr Voss was the local repatriation medical officer. In other spheres he was the first president of the RACQ in Rockhampton. He was also the first president of the Rockhampton Legacy Club, a past master of the Rockhampton Masonic Lodge, an original member of the Rotary Club, and president of the Rockhampton Patriotic Fund. During the years he served as president of this Fund thousands of pounds were
raised for servicemen who enlisted from Rockhampton and district.
He was one of the organisers of the Patriotic Fund, and also initiated the appeal for the memorial peal of bells at St Paul's Cathedral. Another body that benefited by his advice and support was the YWCA. Rowing continued to hold his attention and in Rockhampton,
he displayed much interest and gave valuable advice to oarsmen.
Several times he was runner-up for the Central Queensland golf championship, and once won the Wide Bay, Burnett and District golf title. In later years he was a member of the Athelstane Bowling Club.
Dr Voss is survived by his widow and one son, Vivian Robert, three sisters, Mrs R. Sear, Sydney, Miss V. Voss, Sydney, and Mrs G. W. Jinman, Auckland, NZ., and one brother, Dr Kerrod Voss, of Sydney.
Today a church service will be held at 10.45 a.m. at St Paul's
Cathedral. The funeral will leave the Cathedral for the North
Rockhampton cemetery at 11 a.m.
