Biography

The eldest son of Arthur William Bartholomew (born 1866 and publican of 'The Lamb Inn', Stone nr. Dartford, Kent from 1899 until his death in 1926), Frederick Arthur John Bartholomew left home at a young age and joined the Royal Navy as an ordinary seaman.

He appears to have suffered injuries by burning at some stage and subsequently left the navy and emigrated to Australia where he signed up for active service after the outbreak of WWI in the Australian Imperial Army on 21 Jan 1916.

He used the pseudonym 'James Delaney (or Daleney)' for unknown reasons on enlistment. He was initially assigned to the 21st Howitzer Brigade as a Gunner but later transferred to the 49th Battalion and embarked for Europe on the 'AConfirmation of alias used.gana' in July 1916.

He was killed in action on the first day of the Battle of Messines Ridge, 07 June 1917, age 24.
