He enlisted, in Melbourne on 18/8/1914 and left Australia on 20/10/1914 aboard the HMAT Wiltshire as part of the Ambulaance Corps.

His NOK was his Mother, Mrs Dolan of Gellibrand, then later Queens Street Colac.

He served on Gallipoli and was evacuated from Gallipoli suffering from Tonsellitis.

In Egypt he was transferred to the 2nd Field Ambulance as a driver and remained with this until until the end of the war.

He returned to Australia on 27/1/1919 and was discharged on 28/3/1919.

William died on 19/6/1943 at the age of 58years. His wife applied to the Repatriation Department for compensation because of war service, but this was denied. At this time the family was living at 14 Duffy Street Essendon.
