Mark was the fifth of eight children of Henry (Harry) Griffiths (born 1853 in Launceston, Tasmania) and Louisa (Lucy) Elliott (born 1854 in Hobart Town, Tasmania). Henry was the son of Captain Griffiths who traded between the Eastern States of Australia, New Guinea and New Zealand. Henry 'followed the sea' for fifteen years before marrying Lucy in 1884 at Emu Bay in Tasmania. Harry and Lucy raised their family at Wynyard, where Harry was a Labourer.

Mark was a Labourer at Wynyard in Tasmania when he enlisted in the AIF in October 1916, He served as a Private (Service No:7206) with the 12th Infantry Battalion 24th Reinforcements and was WIA in France in September 1918. Brothers - Henry (Service No:1830), and John (Service No:7495) also served in WWI.

Discharged in July 1919, Mark returned to Tasmania and worked as a Labourer in Table Cape before moving to Victoria where he married Ethel May Hayes (born 1894 at Carlton in Victoria) in 1927 at Carrum. Mark and Ethel were living at Beaumaris in Melbourne, Victoria - where Mark was employed as a Stone Worker and Builder - when he enlisted in the Australian Army in June 1941. Mark served as a Private (Service No:V14810) with 3rd Garrison Brigade, 17 Garrison Battalion and 5 AT Coy RAE. He was Discharged in December 1942. Two of his brothers served in WWII - Sydney (Service N0:T255831) and Reginald (Service No:126743). 

Mark and Ethel lived in Higinbotham in Victoria, where Mark was a Labourer, before retiring to Seaford in 1954. Mark died in 1960 and Ethel in 1984.
