John Farlow was born in Homebush in Sydney and later lived at Flemington. He was 5 feet 5 inches tall with blue eyes and brown hair. he enlisted for the war on 28 May 1915 and was placed into the 1st Battalion with the service number 2365. After initial training he embarked from Sydney on HMAT A67 Orsova on 14 July 1915. He trained some more in Egypt and then reached Gallipoli on 4 November 1915. After the withdrawal from Gallipoli he was repeatedly in trouble with military authorities. He travelled to France with the 1st Battalion in March 1916.
His service in France did not last long. Sometime between 22 and 25 July 1916 John Farlow was killed in action near Pozières. He was buried in the vicinity but his body could not later be recovered.
