Died on this date – 7th February…… Archibald Ambrose Matthew Gunn was born at Cohuna, Victoria on 1st April, 1895.
He enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force (A.I.F.) on 20th September, 1915 as a 20 year old, single, Clerk (in Stock & Station Agents Office; also trained in Surveying) from Surat, Queensland.
Private Archibald Ambrose Matthew Gunn, Service Number 1871, embarked from Sydney, NSW on HMAT Boonah (A36) on 22nd January, 1916 with the 1st Light Horse Brigade, 2nd Light Horse Regiment, 13th Reinforcements.
He was transferred & taken on strength of 1st Light Horse Reserve at Heliopolis on 6th March, 1916.
On 6th April, 1916 Private Gunn was transferred to 4th Div. Artillery at Serapeum. He was taken on strength of 11th Field Artillery Brigade as Gunner & posted to 41st Battery on 21st April, 1916.
Gunner Gunn proceeded to join B.E.F. (British Expeditionary Force) from Alexandria on Haverford on 1st June, 1916. He disembarked at Marseilles, France on 10th June, 1916.
From 2nd November, 1916 Gunner Gunn was to be Temporary Bombardier vice Temp Bombardier McIntyre evacuated sick.
Temporary Bombardier Archibald Ambrose Matthew Gunn was wounded in action on 31st January, 1917. He was admitted to 45th Casualty Clearing Station on 31st January, 1917 with shrapnel wounds to buttock. Temporary Bombardier Gunn was transferred to Ambulance Train 15 on 2nd February, 1917 & admitted to 3rd Stationary Hospital at Rouen, France on 3rd February, 1917. Temporary Bombardier Gunn was transferred to England on 4th February, 1917.
He was admitted to Clandon Park Hospital, Surrey, England with gunshot wounds to both buttocks on 5th February, 1917.
Bombardier Archibald Ambrose Matthew Gunn died on 7th February, 1917 at Clandon Park Hospital, Surrey, England from gunshot wounds & bronchitis (some forms record that he died of broncho-pneumonia).
He was buried in St. Peter & St. Paul Church Cemetery, West Clandon, Surrey, England.
