George was the son of Alexander and Isabella Buchanan of Ballarat, both whom had passed away by 1915.
George Alexander Buchanan enlisted in Ballarat as a Sapper in the 8th Field Company Australian Engineers on 10 February 1915. Born in Ballarat and educated at Mt Pleasant State School, he was a 22-year-old, unmarried blacksmith when he left from Melbourne. He was in and out of hospital for much of his service, with various ailments including jaundice, pneumonia, influenza and dysentery.
George was killed when asleep when a shell hit a dugout, killing and wounding about 23 men of the 8th Field Company Engineers.
His younger brother 1789 Private William John Buchanan 39th Battalion AIF returned to Australia in 1919.
