Died on this date – 21st July…… Edward Robert Hearle was born at Kensington, Victoria in 1895.
He enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force (A.I.F.) on 19th June, 1915 as a 20 year old, single, Printer from Kensington, Victoria.
Private Edward Hearle, Service number 2599, embarked from Melbourne, Victoria on SS Makarini on 15th September, 1915 with the 5th Infantry Battalion, 8th Reinforcements.
He was taken on strength of 5th Battalion at Tel-el-Kebir on 7th January, 1916.
On 23rd January, 1916 he was sent to Field Ambulance at Serapeum & rejoined his Battalion on 2nd February, 1916.
Private Hearle was transferred from 5th Battalion to 57th Battalion on 17th February, 1916. He was transferred to 58th Battalion on 15th March, 1916 & was taken on strength of 58th Battalion at Tel-el-Kebir on 15th March, 1916.
He embarked from Alexandria to join B.E.F. (British Expeditionary Force) on 17th June, 1916 on Transylvania & disembarked at Marseilles, France on 23rd June, 1916.
On 16th July, 1916 Private Edward Hearle was wounded in action in France. He was admitted to No.1 Australian Casualty Clearing Station on 16th July, 1916 with G.S.W. (gunshot wound/s) to shoulder. Private Hearle was transferred to Ambulance Train then admitted to 3rd Canadian Stationary Hospital at Boulogne, France on 17th July, 1916 with S.W.(shrapnel wound/s) to right shoulder & compound fracture. He was invalided to England on Hospital Ship Jan Breydel on 18th July, 1916.
He was admitted to Kitchener Hospital, Brighton, Sussex, England on 18th July, 1916 wounded – severe with a fracture of scapula compound.
Private Edward Robert Hearle died on 21st July, 1916 at Kitchener Hospital, Brighton, Sussex, England from wounds received in action in France – GSW to Scapula followed by Septicaemia.
He was buried in Brighton City (Bear Road) Cemetery, East Sussex, England where 28 other WW1 Australian War Graves are located.
