William Rickwood was born sometime in June, 1871 in Norwood England. During his time living in England he was apart of the 9th Battalion, Middlesex Regiment for 20 years then moved to Australia. By the time of his enlistment in South Australia, he was married to a woman named Sarah Rosanna Rickwood and worked as a brush maker.
Although initially enrolled in the 32nd Battalion, William soon transferred to the 8th Field Ambulance and mostly served in this unit. In October 1917 he returned to Australia as overage.
