Biography contributed by Faithe Jones

Son of Caleb QUINTAL and Anne Naomi nee NOBBS

When the present war broke out there hurried to Sydney to enlist a number of experienced soldiers from the Pacific Islands. Among them was Captain  Fletcher Quintal, from Norfolk Island. Finding there was no chance of going as a commissioned officer, he enlisted as a trooper, is now a corporal, and will surely rise higher before the war is over. He was for three years fighting in South Africa with the New South Wales Bushmen, was in charge of  Colonel Garrett's Scouts, and was mentioned in despatches.

A striking figure in the march was Captain Fletcher Evelyn Quintal, of Norfolk Island, a descendant of Quintal of the Bounty. Six feet three, and straight as a die, despite his 89 years. Captain Quintal served in the South African War with the Imperial Bushmen and later with the New Zealand forces. In the Great War he was wounded in an eye while fighting with the 8th Light Horse. He won his commission on the field.
