Leonard embarked with the 32nd Battalion on HMAT Aeneas on 30 October 1917. They disembarked at Devonport, England on 27 December and were stationed at Sutton Veny for further training prior to undertaking active service. Leonard did not get to join his unit when they were sent to France as he was admitted to St. Mary’s Hospital Codford, England on 19 January 1918 with serious pneumonia. Army Base Records in Melbourne notified Leonard’s mother on 26 March. Due to the seriousness of his condition Leonard was transferred to the 1st Auxiliary Hospital at Harefield then returned to Australia on the Karoola on 8 April 1918 and discharged on 19 July as medically unfit.
