5033 Lance Corporal Bertram Stanley Bacon

5033 Lance Corporal Bertram Stanley Bacon of Golden Plains, Victoria had immigrated to Australia from England and was employed as a labourer when he enlisted for War Service in Melbourne on the 6th of Janurary 1916.
Originally allocated to the Cyclist Corps, Bertram was transferred over to reinforcements for the 7th Battalion, 1st AIF and arrived in Egypt for further training on the 14th of May 1916. From Egypt he was shipped to England and then onto France where he enterered 'The Bull Ring' at Etaples on the 17th of September 1916. Bertram was taken on strength with his Battalion in the trenches on the 16th of October and just over a month after this he was evacuated sick with influenza.
Bertram rejoined his Battalion in the field on New Year's Eve 1916 and his service would be continuous until the end of the War. Bertram was shipped back to Australia for demobilisation on the 12th of May 1919, where he was formally discharged from the 1st AIF.
Shortly after his return, Bertram was admitted into the 11th Australian General Hospital (Caulfield) diagnosed as suffering sarcoma combined with asthenia, and whilst still a patient he succumbed to disease on the 16th of May 1920 at the age of 22. Bertram was formally laid to rest within Springvale General Cemetery.
